Something Different for New Year Resolutions?

last word mandala

New Years is just a few days away, and just so you know, I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. The way I see it, they are designed for failure. I mean seriously, have you ever seen someone NOT fail at their resolutions?

Instead of a resolution I choose a New Year’s “word”. There are no ideals to live up to, no guilt trips, no crushing self disappointment, and especially NO depriving oneself! That’s got to sound a whole heck of a lot better than diets, exercise, and restrictions, yeah?

So what’s the deal with a New Year’s word? Pick a word and reflect positively when it manifests in your life. I look forward to choosing my new word and usually by fall I am already starting to think about choices for the following year, sometimes making a list. Words I have chosen in the past include: build, comfort, faith, abundance, and believe.

Sometime near the beginning of summer I was trying to remember what this years word was. I knew I needed to check out last year’s blahg post, but I just didn’t have the time. I spent my spring making Christmas elves (so I wouldn’t run out this year). And then spent a goodly portion of the summer repainting the inside of my house, ceiling to floor…and sometimes the floor, too!

As I painted my way through the house I realized I had a bunch of stuff I would never use and found stuff I didn’t even know I had! I ended up having a huge yard sale with everything flushed out of the house, and gave the rest away.

After the yard sale, I started concentrating on getting my website(s) ready for the Christmas onslaught, still thinking I needed to go back in the archives and see what this years word is/was. This has been the first year where my word would not come to mind…annoying, but I had lots of things I wanted to get done and just kept procrastinating looking up the word.

It hit me like a ton of bricks just after Thanksgiving…I was in the kitchen, which still needs finished painting, btw, and a bunch of ‘stuff’ piled up that needs to be put away and “organized” !!! Oh mer gerd! My word this year was ‘Organize”!!! … and boy howdy have I done a lot of that! I was amazed at how much the word had influenced itself in my life this year. I got a great deal done with just a little word tickling the recesses of my mind.

And so as the year draws to a close, my list for next years word narrows; so far in the running is- market, gratitude, strategy, produce, connect, advance, focus, patterns, forward, plan, design…the list keeps growing.

How about you? Want to trade a resolution for a word? Leave me a comment and lets see how many different words get chosen this year.

Til tomorrow,

Cindi
